MotoGP 08 Career Mode Crash

Above: Motorcycle crash (unrelated)

Capcom PC ports from this period never had the best QA applied to them which often results in annoying and weird problems.

MotoGP 08 crashes to desktop if you enter career mode with the game set to certain resolutions. In my case it was trying to run the game at 1920×1080. You might be able to start a new career running at this resolution but returning to the game you may encounter this bug, unable to load your game. As an extra kicker it will also corrupt your save file, making you unable to start a new career mode save.

An additional complication is that the launcher doesn’t seem to respect the last used resolution and will change it to something else, further increasing your chances of running into this problem. The hacky solution to this is to set the game to run at a resolution that doesn’t trigger the issue and setting the config file to read only so it can’t change it.

I just went with 1280×720 (720p). You can set it manually by opening up Config.ini in a text editor (notepad). The file can be found in yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Capcom\MotoGP08\Config.ini

Once you’ve done this you’ll need to set the config.ini to read only as mentioned earlier.

In the same folder is the Saves directory, you’ll need to delete the savedata.dat file to reset everything and make sure you can start a new career.
